A couple of weeks ago, Patty, Isla and I got the chance to hang out with our good friends, Tom Dunn & Colleen McGuire.  I’ve known Tom Dunn for many years, and he and his wife, Colleen have become incredible friends to us.  Tom is a professional photographer.  He is a very good professional photographer. So good, in fact, that I have thrown away all of my cameras (even the valuable ones) because honestly, there is just no point anymore. However, I’m keeping the camcorder, as I’m still pretty good at pressing “record.”

We were just meeting at the St. Paul Farmers Market to do some catching up, and Tom was kind enough to take some amazing photos of Isla. As I mentioned before, Isla slept the whole time.  Still, the photos are instant treasures to us.  Be sure to check out Tom Dunn’s website. Then hire him. Immediately.

    Dealable

    Posted in: Baby, humor, parenting

Soon after a baby is born, the nurses perform a hearing test. The test involves attaching electrodes to baby’s head and testing for brain response to audio stimuli. It’s not uncommon for babies to fail the initial test due to fluid in the ears and other potential factors. Isla failed the first test, so we had a follow-up test a few weeks ago. She failed that one too, so after confirming she didn’t have an ear infection, the next step was to visit a Doctor of Audiology at the University of Minnesota yesterday afternoon.

The test determined that Isla has significant hearing loss. More specifically, she has moderate to severe hearing loss in her right ear and mild to moderate hearing loss in her left ear. In practical terms, she can still hear our voices, she can still hear dogs barking, and she can still hear music; it just sounds much more quiet to her. She also has difficulty in hearing higher frequencies, but as everyone knows, all the good stuff happens at lower frequencies anyway.

We will be meeting with some specialists in the next several weeks so we can get started on a plan. They will work to determine the cause of her hearing loss, but considering she is less than two months old, we are prepared to rule out Led Zeppelin’s 1972 North American Tour. Isla will also be fitted for baby hearing aids, which of course will help her with language development. And you’d better believe we will set her up with the most adorable widdle hearing aids ever.

Patty & I are relieved. Until yesterday, we didn’t know if she could hear anything. Now that we know what we’re dealing with, we can help. We’re going to learn sign language, and we’re going to do whatever it takes to help our girl.  I even plan to finally stop mumbling and shave my big honking mustache.

I totally look like this guy!

Oh, one last thing. We noticed early on that Isla never seemed to startle at loud, sudden noises. As we were walking through the parking ramp following the appointment, someone hit their car horn right next to us. Patty & I jumped, and Isla immediately started crying in her stroller. Patty went to console her, but I just said one word:

    “Awesome.”

    Six Weeks

    Posted in: Baby, humor, parenting

Oh, so THAT’S what everyone was talking about when they said, “get some sleep before the baby comes.”  Well, maybe if people weren’t laughing so much when they said it, I would have taken them seriously.

Isla is six weeks old today and although she is not as tiny as the day she was born, she is even more beautiful.  As you can imagine, the past six weeks have been a tremendous learning experience for Patty and me.  The most important thing we have learned is that we absolutely love being parents.  Even with the lack of sleep, the disjointed schedules, and the fact that previously mundane activities have been transformed into massive undertakings requiring honest-to-God planning, we love the new gig.

Indie & Bear were a little nervous at first, but they have finally warmed up to the adorable li’l screamer. Also, Bear can be bribed with “ice cream.”

This past weekend we also brought Isla to her first Farmers Market where we met up some great friends.  The sheer excitement of being in St. Paul, MN caused her to completely pass out.  Seriously, she slept the whole time! Even while we looked at Parsnips! Parsnips!!

Now that I’m done saying “parsnips,” here’s a photo of the pasty happy family.  Um, Patty and I didn’t realize we were both wearing black until we got there.  Isla is of course looking stunningly sleepy in her red cherry dress.

Man, I wish I could sleep like that.

Elisabeth spit up on me for the first time today.  I haven’t had another human being spit up on me since my Confirmation, so the events of earlier today came as a peristaltic stroll down memory lane.  The strange thing is that I didn’t mind, not really.  It’s absolutely true; when it is someone you care about all other concerns just kinda fade into the background.  Not that I want to make of habit of this, mind you.

I should also point out that Patty & I have used more laundry stain remover in the last week than we have in the preceding six years.  (I won’t say the brand name, because it’s not like they’re going to send a complimentary 5-gallon drum for the laundry room.)

Speaking of laundry; at the risk of bragging about something horribly pathetic, I am becoming quite the laundry Jedi around here.  Sure, all of the websites I visited suggested that in order to relieve stress and catch some zzz’s, we’re supposed to let the laundry wait. You know, just let it sit there, mocking me. OK, but when exactly is this stuff supposed to get done?  Do you have any idea how stressful a big honkin’ pile of laundry is?  Besides, a lot of the new laundry I’m doing represents a veritable bio-hazard, so yeah, I’m gonna go ahead and hop to it.

The dirty dishes can rot in hell, of course.

Little Isla has been with us for a little over a week now, and other than the fact that Patty is still recovering and I’m lumbering around like an extra from a George Romero film, we are adjusting very well. I could go on about the staggering joy of being a proud papa, but I’m wearing a larger-than-usual quantity of spit-up, so I’ll wait on that for the time being. It’s hard to believe that just over a week ago, I had never changed a diaper or burped a human or eaten a sandwich. Now it feels like second nature. We are also continually amazed by all of the little noises and faces she makes. Admittedly, most of those adorable wittle things are gas-related, but since they’re cute as hell, we’ll take ‘em.

Indie & Bear are also settling into their new positions in the hierarchy around here. No more jumping on the bed, no more dog parties until 2AM. They are having a harder time realizing that not all of the new stuffed toys are for them. However, that can be handled by gentle yelling. The good news for both dogs is that in order to keep them from getting underfoot, Patty suggested I tucker them out. So, the dogs and I rented Tucker: The Man and His Dream, which of course put them right out.

I feel like I have so much to write about, simply because I learn something new every day. All I know is that being a dad and husband is the best role I ever had.

    Oh, Hey! Baby Pictures!

    Elisabeth Jane

    Posted in: humor

Elisabeth Jane Schuette was born today at 11:24 AM.  She weighed 8 lbs 6 ounces at birth and measures 20.5 inches long.  Patty and little “Isla” are doing fine, although they are both alternating between hungry and exhausted.  I was thrilled to be a part of this amazing process and I find myself in the unusual position of being nearly speechless.  It all makes sense to me now.  Every decision I’ve ever made in my life has led me to this point, and every decision I make from now on carries an added dimension because it involves her.  I could not possibly be happier about that. She is a beautiful girl and she is going to see so many amazing things in her life.  I can’t wait to see some of them with her.

Oh, and her nickname is pronounced “EYE-la.”

    Because we like it.

    Anytime Now!

    Posted in: Baby, Music, humor

I actually I thought I’d be posting baby photos by now.  Seriously, I was certain that I would telling you how Wifey, Baby and I spent D-Day.  Alas, there is no baby yet, and we wasted D-Day by sitting around looking confused and eating ice cream.  Just like Arbor Day!  Don’t worry, though; there will be news soon enough!

It also dawned on me that unless our little girl wants me to read her books on the subject of  audio recording and/or home repair, I may want to start looking for some new children’s books.  I’m certainly open to suggestions, so let me know what you think.

I should also mention that during my search, I came across the website of a very talented illustrator named Nina Victor Crittenden.  She has no idea who I am, but I definitely recommend you check out her work at her website.  Very cool stuff.

I’ve also been making the most of the voluminous amount of free time one associates with pre-parenthood by continuing to make music.  I had a lot of fun recording this piece.  It has a toy piano, a Mellotron and a few other things that I can’t recall at the moment.  Patty said it reminds her of  a walk in the park.  I couldn’t have said it better myself, so I’m calling this one “Through The Park,” and it is 1:41m long.  Enjoy!

    Old Timey

    Posted in: Music, humor

I did a little recording this morning.  And just to let you know how easily distracted I am, I was actually working on an orchestral score, when I decided to take a break and try something different.  The result will never be mistaken for “orchestral.” (Not if I have anything to say about it.)

I own an old Rhodes Stage 73 piano that I am in the process of restoring.  Here’s a pic. Idn’t she cute?

I’ve already repaired the mechanics of it and I am in the process of replacing the old Tolex on the outside.  More on that another time.  (And, yes, I meant to say “idn’t;” that’s how I role…OK, that was a typo.)

So, this morning I was playing the Rhodes and decided to run it through my equally old Fender Twin Reverb Amp.  I also added some distortion to give it kind of an early 70s, Faces sound.  Yes, that was Rod Stewart’s band before he became the (ahem) performer he is today.

It’s a short piece (1:21) but it’s long on attitude.  Wait, no, the attitude is pretty short too now that I look at it in the right lighting.

    Nesting

    Posted in: Baby, humor

Nesting?  You want nesting?  I’LL give you nesting.  Our impending future human will likely be arriving within the next month, so Patty & I have been veritable whirlwinds of activity here at Casa und Hovel de Schuette par la mer (across from the rendering plant.)  As the due date approaches, we have been finishing projects that we put off a long time ago, and starting projects that simply have to get done before the baby arrives.  As you can guess, this really cuts into my lounging and/or writing schedule.

The house is looking great, though; we have re-hung closet doors, replaced light fixtures, created (and repaired) several holes in a handful of walls. We’ve put up shelves, dusted the hell out of everything and everyone who has been inside this house.  We’ve made countless visits to Menards and Ace Hardware.  I’ve walked the dogs extra times just to tire them out.  I also trained Indie to sort tiny screws and bolts, just so she knows who’s boss around here.  We’ve painted, cleaned, painted again, cleaned again, then slept for a couple of hours each night before getting up and doing it all again.

We’ve stocked up on food and food-based ingestibles, and we’re putting a lot of pre-made meals in the freezer.  We’ve also baby-proofed, dog-proofed, cat-proofed, and Cloverfield Monster-proofed the entire joint.  If you feel like hitting your head on the corner of a coffee table in MY house, now would be the time to do it.

I even de-MC Escher-ed my organizational nightmare of a garage. You know those big pieces of pegboard that people put in their garages and then hang stuff from? Well, I gots ‘em!   I’ll have a whole lotta challenges with the new baby, but you better believe I can find a screwdriver when I need one!  Anything that was on the floor is on a wall or in the garbage!  Anything that was in the garbage is in the yard! (what are you, a cop?)

In addition to making the house awesomely radical and funky fresh, we also attended three (count ‘em,) three birthing classes.  I learned a ton (mostly that I can apparently watch anything on a television screen.)

Despite all of this preparation, I still have to admit that I’m nervous.  No one looks forward to seeing a loved one go through a difficult process.  I know that Patty is strong enough to do great; I can only hope that I am too.

Either way, I’ll be right there with her.

Since Patty & I are expecting our little human any day now, I decided it was time to do the most important possible thing a dad can do: I bought a camcorder.  OK, I didn’t actually get the Marty McFly Special, because I didn’t feel like breaking into the Smithsonian…yet.  I actually bought the new Kodak Playsport.  It’s one of those quick point and shoot jobbies and it looks like this:

It’s surprisingly inexpensive online, and it’s a lot easier on the shoulders.  I decided to test it out earlier this afternoon when I took Indie & Bear to the park.  Here is some video I shot, then edited in iMovie.  Nothing fancy, just a nice day at the spooky abandoned hockey rink.
